Chapter History

Kappa Tau was founded and chartered on June 20, 1959, in Canton, Ohio, at the Canton Urban League located at 819 Liberty Street SE.

Bro. Leonard Holland of Columbus, Ohio, was the District Representative, and he officiated the induction, invitation, and the installation of the following officers:

  • Bro. Bill Pollard, Basileus
  • Bro. Arthur Beeler, Keeper of Finance
  • Bro. Oliver Miller, Keeper of Peace
  • Bro. Art Malone, Chaplain

Bro. Fred Johnson and Bro. Calvin Walton were present during the chartering of the chapter. Kappa Tau is located in the 4th District, encompassing Ohio and West Virginia.

Since its chartering, Kappa Tau has been the home of several notable Omega men who were pillars in the Stark and Summit County communities.  These members include but are not limited to Bro. Judge Ira Turpin, Stark County's first black Chief Assistant Prosecutor; Bro. Walter C. Crenshaw, Jr., first black Executive Director of the Canton Area Housing Authority; Bro. Albert H. McIlwain, served as Deputy Director of Stark County Metropolitan Housing Authority; Bro. Joseph N. Smith, served as Executive Director of Canton Urban League; Bro. Owen J. Barnes, II, first black teaching graduate assistant at Kent State University; Bro. William L. Hunter, the first black to become a high school principal in Stark County; Bro. Stephen A. Perry, first black promoted to Senior Vice President at The Timken Company; Bro. Fonda P. Williams, II, first black Deputy Mayor for Canton, Ohio; Bro. Allen G. Carter, Sr., first black Chief Magistrate for Summit County; Bro. Michael Ward, first black band director at McKinley Senior High School; Bro. Asie Singleton, first black police officer in Jackson Township.

Kappa Tau has donated over $80,000 in scholarships to high school seniors to help them continue their education and food to needy families during Achievement Week and worked with the NAACP to host voter registration drives and forums to teach young people how to deal with police.
